Message from Northumbria Police

We're currently working closely with our partner agencies to ensure the safety of people enjoying a night out in the city centre - this is particularly relevant for women.

Over recent weeks we've had a couple of incidents reported to us where vulnerable women on their own have got into a taxi, or a vehicle purporting to be a taxi, and have subsequently been assaulted by the driver.

We're currently carrying out an investigation into these incidents and are building up a picture of events and intelligence to identify offenders and ensure they are dealt with appropriately - we've already had some success with this.

However, it's important you stay safe while out enjoying the night-life in Newcastle and take heed of the following advice:

- Stick together with friends and try to travel home together
- If possible, pre-book your taxi home
- Never get into a car without checking that it's a genuine taxi - it will have a taxi license plate and the driver will have an identity badge. If in doubt don't get in.
- Be aware of how much you are drinking and the effect it can have on your judgement.

We'd also ask you to look out for women who are alone and vulnerable and alert bar staff, Street Pastors or police so we can ensure they are helped home safely.

You should also let police know if you see any vehicles that are not taxis approaching lone women in the street, vehicles you might see regularly driving around the city at night - or those you see several times in one night.

It's important to note that Newcastle remains a safe city for people to come and enjoy themselves, however, by following this advice and helping identify suspicious behaviour, you can help us keep it that way. Please pass this message on to others.

If you've any concerns or enquiries please don't hesitate to contact us via 03456 043 043.
