Many fires in the home are caused by a single moment of carelessness and could be easily prevented. It is important to be aware of possible fire hazards around the home and to take steps to protect you and your family from fire.

What to do in case of fire

If the alarm sounds or a fire has broken out:

  • Do not try to put ot the fire unless you can do it safely and quickly.
  • Alert everyone in your home, and get them out by the safest route. 
  • Feel all doors before opening. If they are hot, leave them closed.
  • Close all doors behind you.
  • Call the fire brigade on 999.
  • Alert your neighbours.
  • Stay out until the fire brigade give you the all clear to go back in.

Top Tip - Test it

Test the batteries in your smoke alarm once a month. Never remove them.

Top Tip - Keep out of reach

Avoid leaving children in the kitchen alone when cooking on the hob – keep matches and saucepan handles out of their reach

Don’t overload sockets – try to keep one plug per socket

       
Top Tip - Put cigarettes out. Right out!

Stub cigarettes out properly and dispose of them carefully. Put them out, right out!

Ensure candles are secured in a proper holder and kept away from curtains or fabrics

Plan an escape route and make sure everyone knows how to escape

Don’t tackle fires yourself – get out and stay out and call 999

       
Top Tip - Make a bedtime check

Make a bedtime check of your home before you go to bed – you are more at risk from a fire when asleep. Close inside doors at night to prevent a fire from spreading
