Homes to rent

How to apply?

To apply for a new home you will need to register through the Durham Key Options website.

Durham Key Options is a partnership of housing providers in County Durham where all social housing properties are advertised and let.

The Durham Key Options system shows you more information about the properties available, the ability to decide when you bid for a property and more choice when choosing a home and area.

Frequently asked questions

How will my application be assessed?

Your housing application will be placed into a band in accordance with your housing needs. Our Choice Based Lettings team will look at your housing needs and place your application into one of five allocation bands.

By law we must give priority to people in need and people with the most or multiple needs must have the most priority.

How do I know if I have been accepted?

You will receive a letter confirming that you have been accepted onto the Housing Register. This will tell you the band you have been placed in and the date your application has been registered from.

What do I do if my circumstances change?

It is very important that you tell us of any changes in your circumstances so that we can amend your application. We will tell you if this results in your application moving to a different band. If you move up an application band the date used will be the date you move into that band. If you move down a band the date used will be your original date of application.

How do I bid for a property?

You can bid via the Durham Key Options website.

What do you mean by the term bid?

The term "bid" simply means letting us know you would like to be considered for a particular property. It does not mean you have to pay any money for the property nor does it mean you will have to attend an auction. We use the term "bid" but another term for it is "expressing an interest/applying for a property".

How often are properties advertised?

Properties available for rent are advertised each week from Thursday morning (1 minute past midnight) until Tuesday evening (1 minute to midnight). As soon as we are given formal notice that a property is due to become vacant, we will in the majority of cases, advertise it.

Where are properties advertised?

The properties are advertised on Durham Key Options website.

I'm homeless - can you help?

At Cestria we currently don’t provide emergency accommodation for homeless people – if you are homeless you need to contact Durham County Council.
